PROGRAM
Adamello hiking tour through glaciers & World War I trails
This hiking tour is ideal for those who want to discover the Adamello glacier, the largest in the Italian Alps, and the most significant places of the World War I.
You will walk on hazardous walkways and through tunnels along Sentiero dei Fiori in order to reach the 6- ton Cresta Croce Cannon that the troops dragged from the valley up to the mountain. Last but not least the crossing of Passo Brizzio on the slopes of Corno Bianco.
An interesting mix of via ferrata and mountaineering retracing places that testify life and sufferings of soldiers forced at 3000m during the fights of the World War I.
Program details
- Day 1 - VIA FERRATA SENTIERO DEI FIORI
Ascent: +590m. Descent: -720m. Distance: 7km. Hiking time: 5h (2h30 via ferrata).
At 8:30 meeting with the Mountain Guide and equipment check. Ascent by lifts to Paradiso Pass, from where we keep walking on a rocky path until the starting point of Sentiero dei Fiori. The trail is a Via Ferrata set at an average altitude of 3.000 m following the trails which the Italian alpine troopers used to connect the various military spots scattered on the ridge. From Lago Scuro Pass, where one of the largest military village at high altitude was located, we will descent to the homonymous lake. Dinner and overnight stay in hut (2.449 m).
- Day 2 - CRESTA CROCE
Ascent: +890m. Descent: -310m. Distance: 7km. Hiking time: 6h
By crossing the moraine of Mandrone Glacier, which leads to Pian di Neve Glacier, we keep on walking while roped together and wearing crampons until Lobbia Pass (3.015 m). Continuing on Lobbia glacieret, with a short equipped stretch and on ridge passages, you reach the large granite cross dedicated to Pope John Paul II (3.307 m) and the station of Cannon 149G (3.275 m) that the Alpine troops dragged from the valley up to the mountain to hit the first Austrian lines during the conflict of '15-'18 (the climb to Cresta Croce will be possible based on environmental conditions. The evaluation is at the discretion of the Mountain Guide). Dinner and overnight stay in hut (3.040 m).
- Day 3 - CORNO BIANCO
Ascent: +480m. Descent: -1890m. Distance: 17km. Hiking time: 8h
We cross the Pian di Neve glacier again, roped together and while wearing crampons, this time stepping on the slopes of Corno Bianco (3,434 m), one of the most fascinating mountain peaks in Adamello. We go up to Passo Brizzio (3,147 m) where we find the impressive Zanon Morelli Bivouac. From here the descent into the wild Val d'Avio starts, on the Adamello Lombard side, where the spectacle of rock and frozen snow slowly gives way to verdant woods and clear alpine mirrors of water. Here we reach the Garibaldi Hut in Val Camonica and we can enjoy the last fantastic views of the Adamello from a new perspective. We continue the journey until we reach the meeting point with the transfer. Return to Tonale Pass.
Additional clarifications
The program could be changed at the discretion of the Campo Base Team / Mountain Guide (UIAGM certified) based on weather conditions and snow levels, maintaining unaltered, however, the basic structure and the aims of the proposal.
