Vioz - Cevedale crossing: Alpine trek

The best-known classic route among the Classics, one of the most beautiful itineraries in high altitude is set in the Ortles Cevedale group, traced on the ridge which divides Lombardy from Trentino, theater of the Great War, overlooking the largest glacial basin in Italy, Forni Glacier.

The itinerary goes from Monte Vioz (3.644 m) to Monte Cevedale (3.769 m) and it takes you to the summit of four peaks above 3.500 meters in the same day.

This crossing is also one of the “legs” of the famous “13 peaks' crossing” which offers a breathtaking view of all the peaks which form the amphitheater of the Forni Glacier.

Program details

  • 1° day - MONTE VIOZ
    Ascent: +1220m. Descent: -0m. Distance: 6km. Hiking time: 5h. 
    At 09:00 meeting with the Mountain Guide and short briefing on the program. Left the car in the village of Peio, you reach by lifts Rifugio Doss Dei Cembri (2.315 m), starting point of the tour. From here, following a military path, you gradually climb to Rifugio Vioz (3.535 m). Rifugio Mantova al Vioz is the highest hut in the eastern Alps and was the seat of the Austrian command during the White War. On easy rocks from the hut you can reach the summit of Vioz which offers spectacular views of the surrounding peaks of the Ortler-Cevedale group. Dinner and overnight stay in hut (3.535 m).
     
  • 2° day - TRAVERSATA VIOZ-CEVEDALE
    Ascent: +750m. Descent: -2000m. Distance: 16km. Hiking time: 9h30. 
    Early in the morning you go up to Cima Vioz (3.645 m) from where our crossing begins. With crampons, you start walking along the ridge between Trentino and Lombardy following the glacier until Palon de la Mare (3.703 m) and from there to the Rosole bivouac (3.470 m). Admiring the view of the Forni glacier you continue for the last climb up to Cima Cevedale (3.769 m) and last but not least to the Zuffalspitze (3.757 m). At the end of the climb you continue downhill along Val de la Mare crossing wide valleys untiil you reach Malga Mare, the final point of your tour. Return to Peio with private transfer.

Additional clarifications

The program could be changed at the discretion of the Campo Base Team / Mountain Guide (UIAGM certified) based on weather conditions and snow levels, maintaining unaltered, however, the basic structure and the aims of the proposal.
