Snowshoeing
the new form of winter trekking
Experiencing the mountains and appreciating every nuance is now possible even during the season when the whole landscape is covered by a white blanket: winter.
Winter hiking has become a common and increasingly popular activity among trekking enthusiasts thanks to the discovery of snowshoes… although, in truth, it is not really a discovery, but rather a return to ancient traditions from the past.
At this point, many of you may be wondering: what exactly are snowshoes? It is a perfectly reasonable question, since until recently these tools were little known and rarely used.
Snowshoes are simply a means of moving across fresh snow without sinking, by applying the principle of increasing the support surface.
Now you will have clearly understood what we are talking about, but perhaps what you do not know is that snowshoes have roots in the distant past.
The first traces date back to 6,000 BC, when snowshoes consisted of a simple wooden ring with strips of leather or rope inside. They were an essential tool for populations, especially in the cold regions of Asia and America, allowing them to move through harsh conditions in search of food, for survival, or simply to travel long distances.
Today, snowshoes are used for very different reasons: fun, sport and, of course, hiking or winter trekking.
Why try snowshoeing? Because you will have the chance to walk in close contact with nature through magical landscapes, far from the crowds of tourist resorts, and above all, to discover another dimension of the mountains. There is nothing more exciting for spending an unforgettable day with family and friends.
Moving with snowshoes does not require any special skills. It is, in fact, a very simple movement which, by simply allowing you to float on the snow, will take you to mountain huts and high-altitude peaks.
It is an activity suitable for everyone, including families with children, as there are snowshoeing itineraries of various levels. All you need is a little physical effort, a pair of trekking poles and plenty of passion for the mountains — then off you go… once you put on your snowshoes, you will step into a fairytale world.
The most magical place to try this activity is certainly Trentino, as, in addition to being an extraordinary destination from a scenic point of view, it offers numerous snowshoeing trails.
At Campo Base, we have designed a number of snowshoeing tours especially for you, taking you to discover fairytale landscapes! So, what do you think — are you ready to go snowshoeing?
