Spectacular hut-to-hut hiking routes to explore the Dolomites
The Dolomites are a UNESCO World Heritage Site and an experience that every mountain lover should live at least once in their lifetime. Hiking in the Dolomites means immersing yourself in unique natural landscapes, where every rock tells a story. Hut-to-hut hiking is undoubtedly the best way to explore this iconic mountain range.
Dolomites hiking trails allow you to discover exceptionally diverse environments at every stage, from dramatic rock formations to wide meadows to lunar-like rocky plateaus. Each day begins with spectacular sunrise and ends with warm sunset views, as the mountains glow in shades from soft pink to fiery orange thanks to the famous Enrosadira phenomenon. Spending nights in mountain huts – called rifugi in Italian – adds an authentic character to the experience, letting you embrace the slow rhythm of the mountains.
What are the Dolomites?
The Dolomites are the most famous range in the entire Alps. Located in Northern Italy, the Dolomites stretch across three regions Trentino Alto Adige, Veneto and Friuli Venezia Giulia, covering about 16.000km2. The Dolomites are home to extraordinary natural beauty and hold remarkable geological value, for these reasons they were recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage in 2009.
The truly unique character of the Dolomites comes from their origins: over 250 million years ago, these peaks were part of a tropical sea, made of coral reefs, shells and algae. Over time the sediments transformed into dolomite rock and rose into today’s towers, pinnacles and vertical walls. The unique mineral composition gives the mountain their pale color creating the perfect canvas on which the Enrosadira phenomenon paints the mountains in soft shades of pink and fiery oranges. This phenomenon creates the most magical photo opportunities across the entire Dolomites range.
Today the Dolomites are a stunning mix of nature, history and traditions, gifting you extraordinarily varied scenery ranging from alpine meadows to rocky plateaus and dramatic peaks.

1. Alta Via 1 of the Dolomites
Our first choice is a true classic - a hike that represents every hiker’s dream: Alta Via 1 of the Dolomites. It is the most famous long-distance hut-to-hut itinerary in the Dolomites; it stretches over 125 km of stunning scenery. Starting from the enchanting Lake Braies, the trail winds through historic paths and breathtaking landscapes, to reach the city of Belluno. The journey begins at the iconic emerald lake nested in the Fanes-Sennes-Braies Nature Park. From here you immerse yourself in the parks’ forests and valleys until you reach one of the most iconic spots of the trail: the Lagazuoi massif. This site is like an open-air museum with a 360° panoramic view of the Dolomites’ peaks. This is only the beginning of a trek from hut to hut characterized by emblematic landscapes. You’ll encounter the unmistakable Cinque Torri, with their unique profile resembling a castle with five towers. As you follow the trails, the scenery changes: it becomes wilder, and less frequented. First you enter the rugged Civetta-Moiazza group, then you venture into the Dolomiti Bellunesi National Park to discover its characteristic moraine landscapes.
Here your Alta Via 1 adventure comes to and end: a long-distance hut-to-hut trek in the Dolomites that perfectly blends history, nature and majestic landscapes.
If you prefer a shorter and more focused experience, we suggest the two sections of the Alta Via 1 of the Dolomites: Alta Via 1 Northern trek and Alta Via 1 Southern trek.

If you are looking for a wilder advernture, then we suggest the Alta Via 1 Southern trek. This hut-to-hut itinerary unfolds in southern section of the Alta Via 1 of the Dolomites: from Passo Falzarego it crosses the Pelmo, Civetta-Moiazza and Schiara to Belluno.

Then you’ll hike at the foot of the Rosengarten range, renowned for the Enrosadira phenomenon. At sunset the lights paint its peaks shades of pink and orange, bringing to life the legend of King Laurin and his enchanted garden. From here you hike towards the imposing walls of Sassopiatto and Sassolungo. The trails winding from the massifs offer you the chance to enjoy spectacular views of Val Gardena, Seiser Alm and the Puez-Odle and Sella mountain groups.
