Vioz - Cevedale crossing: Alpine trek
The classic among the classics, one of the most beautiful high altitude excursions of the Ortles Cevedale group, traced on the ridge that divides the Lombardy area from the Trentino region, theater of the Great War, overlooking the largest glacial basin in Italy, Forni glacier.
The itinerary goes from Monte Vioz (3.644 m) to Monte Cevedale (3.769 m) and it takes you to the summits of four peaks above 3.500 meters in the same day.
This crossing is also one of the “legs” of the famous “13 peaks crossing” which offers a breathtaking view of all the peaks that form the amphitheater of the Forni Glacier.
Program details
- 1° day - MONTE VIOZ
Ascent: +1220m. Descent: -0m. Distance: 6km. Hiking time: 5h.
At 09:00 meeting with the Mountain Guide and short briefing on the program. Left the car in the village of Peio, you reach by lifts Rifugio Doss Dei Cembri (2.315 m), starting point of the tour. From here, following a military path, you gradually climb to Rifugio Vioz (3.535 m). Rifugio Mantova al Vioz is the highest hut in the eastern Alps and was the seat of the Austrian command during the White War. On easy rocks from the hut you can reach the summit of Vioz which offers spectacular views of the surrounding peaks of the Ortler-Cevedale group. Dinner and overnight stay in hut (3.535 m).
- 2° day - TRAVERSATA VIOZ-CEVEDALE
Ascent: +750m. Descent: -2000m. Distance: 16km. Hiking time: 9h30.
Early in the morning you go up to Cima Vioz (3.645 m) from where our crossing begins. With crampons, you start walking along the ridge between Trentino and Lombardy following the glacier until Palon de la Mare (3.703 m) and from there to the Rosole bivouac (3.470 m). Admiring the view of the Forni glacier you continue for the last climb up to Cima Cevedale (3.769 m) and last but not least to the Zuffalspitze (3.757 m). At the end of the climb you continue downhill along Val de la Mare crossing wide valleys untiil you reach Malga Mare, the final point of your tour. Return to Peio with private transfer.
Additional clarifications
The program could be changed at the discretion of the Campo Base Team / Mountain Guide (UIAGM certified) based on weather conditions and snow levels, maintaining unaltered, however, the basic structure and the aims of the proposal.

Booking conditions
Group departures
The reservation request is considered a binding agreement. Availability of all services will be checked by our staff, who will provide confirmation by email within 48 working hours.
If there is no availability on the selected dates, the option will be as follows:
- To use the deposit to book another trip
- To choose alternative dates
- To cancel the trip with full refund of the deposit
Private departures
The reservation request is considered a binding agreement. Our staff will contact you withing 48 working hours to confirm the possibility to join the group.
The group departure will be confirmed on reaching the specified minimum number and clients will be informed not less than 21 day before the trip start date.
Should a group departure not reach the minimum number required, the option will be as follows:
- To use the deposit to book another trip
- To confirm the departure with fewer participant possibly adding a supplement
- To use the deposit to book a Self-guided trip
- To cancel the trip with full refund of the deposit
Payment conditions
All services will be confirmed only after having received a 30% deposit (or the full cost in case of “last minute” bookings) of the vacation.
Balance payment is due 21 days before the trip.
We accept the following payment methods: Bank transfer or credit card (Mastercard/ Visa).
Cancellation policy
In case of cancellation the following terms & conditions will be applied:
- 30% of the total price of the trip for cancellations communicated up to 45 days prior to the trip start date
- 70% of the total price of the trip for cancellations communicated from 44 to 30 days prior to the trip start date
- No refund beyond these terms
